More Than a Game

I can’t help but feel somewhat torn when hearing an arena of Canadian hockey fans booing the American national anthem. I stand opposed to virtually everything the current American president and his goons represent. Some of his supporters have seen the reality of what the next four years will be like compared to what they were promised and they’re not happy. They can be blamed for their ignorance, but Donald Trump is a conman by profession. For those among his allegiant followers who have yet to see the light, there is little hope the spell will ever be broken.

The American team beat the Canadians 3-1 in their first game of the Four Nations tournament; some cash grab thought up by the NHL brass. I don’t care about the score, I don’t care if we lose this whole little tournament and come away with nothing. I heard that arena singing the Canadian national anthem, and I felt strong. These days aren’t tricky, they’re frightening. Donald Trump and President Musk are unpredictable and prefer to rely on a shoot from the hip strategy. If he wants to economically sanction Canada until we’re weak at the knees and collapse under the cheap steel foot of America, what will we do?

We will do our damndest, that’s what. It’s what we’ve done before and I know many millions of Canadians are ready to do it again. I love many American people, there’s plenty of good folks down there I’ve had the privilege of meeting and speaking with. We need only look to the election results to see over 70 million others did not want the Orange regime taking the wheel. So when I feel pride seeing my countrymen and women boo the American anthem, boo their flag, it’s not targeting American people. It’s the American nightmare. It’s the chaos leaking over the border they boo and I stand by every one of them.

With any luck the Canadian government has taken the cue and has begun to negotiate trade with other countries. We’ve got plenty of goods to sell and the world is a big market. It was a mistake to have so much of our economy invested in the United States anyways, but who could have guessed this imbecile would rupture such a historic relationship? My only hope is this tension doesn’t last longer than his four years.

That said I have waning faith he will actually give up the seat. I do not expect him to do the morally or legally right thing at any point and I do not trust him by any means to willingly become a citizen once more without at least putting his own flesh and blood in the chair before he walks out the door. But there’s no need to speculate, especially with this madman at the helm. He’ll cause plenty of damage by the time he’s done. No need guessing which windows he’ll break.
