Photo Finish in Stage One of 2024 Tour de France
This was the first Grand Depart in Italy, the 26th to ever take place abroad. Tour 2024 will conclude in Nice, the first finish outside Paris in race history.
A big story on the day was the health of cycling great Mark Cavendish. With teammates dumping water over him and keeping him company as far as 30 minutes behind the lead group, Cavendish has seen better days. At one point it appeared as though he vomited to the side. One of Cavendish’s team mates Michele Gazzoli abandoned Le Tour near the midway point of stage one.
It was a very hot, humid day in Spain while the cyclists tore along the roads of Italy. The 206 km was finished in 5 hours 7 minutes 22 seconds.
The day finished on a high note for Team DSM-Firmenich Postnl who finished first and second, with Romain Bardet finishing first and Frank Van Den Broek taking second.
Team DSM-Firmenich Postnl sits atop the team standings at the end of stage one. Bardet will be wearing the Yellow jersey to start stage two in Cesenatico. Van Den Broek will be sporting the White jersey as the top young rider.
The Green jersey will be worn by French rider Sandy Dujardin from Total Energies who has 20 points through stage 1. Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen sits in 2nd with 17 points and Ryan Gibbons sits third with 15 points.
The Polka Dot jersey will be on the shoulders of Ion Izagirre from team Cofidis.
