Well, it happened.
He won. The guy who likes to just “grab ‘em by the pussy” and rub elbows with Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-Un took the prize. Not officially at this point but the writing is on the wall. Take down the streamers, Kamala, the ship has sailed.
I don’t live there but I still fear the consequences. Anyone brought state-side when they were children will be wary and maybe should consider planning an exit strategy. He said he’s coming for illegal residents and history shows maniacal Presidents aren’t much for sympathy when it comes to unfurling their policies. We should be sure to keep an eye on his political opponents, too. Even his biggest supporters will tell you most of what he says is bullshit but when an egomaniac says he’s coming for revenge it’s best to take him seriously.
He paid off a woman who accused him of being a rapist and said he’ll be a dictator for a day. He said there were good people on both sides when Nazis lit torches in his country and was caught red-handed telling Georgia Secretary of State “I just want to find 11,780 votes” after he lost the last election, for which he was charged. He has all but said he will abandon Ukraine and has little use for NATO. All but one of his 26 former cabinet members have totally abandoned him due to the insane things he wanted to do as President in his first term, none of whom will be there to slap his hand when he reaches for the tools that will reshape the world.
None of these fatal flaws matter now because he won.
And kudos to him. This might be the first election he has ever accepted the results. He’s been saying for more than a week the whole thing is fixed but once you win who gives a damn? Just another trophy he can give himself. How long until he starts awarding himself medals to pin to his chest?
Things might get bad. Hell, they could get real bad. But that’s always been on the table. It’s a requisite of life that things can go from good to bad faster than you have time to know what hit you. It’s the cost of participating in life. It’s not a good but it’s what we’ve got.
This may be a dark day for the history books. From here there’s no way of knowing. Time will tell how deep the well is but today it is clear we have certainly fallen in.
